Top 10 Questions Schools Ask About Hiring International Teachers

By
Teacher and students

For many school administrators, hiring foreign teachers in the U.S. naturally raises some questions—at least at first. How long can a teacher stay? What subjects can they cover? Who handles the paperwork? The good news is that the J-1 Teacher Exchange Program is more straightforward than it looks, and the common concerns all have clear, reassuring answers.

Schools most commonly ask about teacher eligibility, certification, program length, costs, visa sponsorship, and their responsibilities as a host school. Below, we answer those questions and explain what you need to know about hiring international teachers through the J-1 Teacher program.

Do you have questions about the J-1 Teacher program? Read on—AIFS Professional Pathways has the answers.

1. Does a J-1 Teacher Need to Be Certified to Teach in the U.S.?

U.S. teaching certification requirements vary by state and school type, and some have specific provisional or alternative certification pathways designed for international teachers participating in exchange programs. In most cases, state-specific certification can be completed after a teacher has accepted an offer from a host school, so it is often not required before the process begins. However, a license is often required before a position start date. It is important to review your local Department of Education’s resources or contact them directly.

In addition to meeting local teaching requirements, all J-1 Teacher candidates must hold a teaching certificate (or equivalent) from their home country, a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s in education or their subject area, and a minimum of two years of full-time teaching experience abroad. AIFS Professional Pathways provides general guidance on state certification requirements as part of the sponsorship process, and can assist with obtaining fast, NACES-approved immigration and teacher credential evaluations necessary for teacher onboarding.

2. How Long Can an International Teacher Stay at My School?

International teachers can stay on board longer than many administrators expect. The J-1 Teacher program offers an initial placement period of up to three years, with the option to extend for an additional one or two years, for a total maximum program length of five years.

For forward-thinking schools looking to increase teaching staff capacity and foster lasting student–teacher relationships, the five-year ceiling is extremely beneficial, providing continuity that’s difficult to achieve with shorter-term staffing solutions. J-1 Teachers can be a long-term, stable presence in your faculty, building genuine relationships with students and colleagues over multiple academic years.

3. What Subjects Can J-1 Teachers Cover?

J-1 Teachers can teach across a wide range of primary and secondary school subjects, depending on their qualifications and your school’s needs. The program is particularly well-suited to addressing critical subject areas, including:

  • STEM subjects such as math, physical sciences, and computer science
  • Foreign languages and bilingual education
  • Special education
  • Elementary and general education
  • Humanities and social studies

Positions in K-12 classrooms can include all fields, while positions in a Pre-K classroom are only permitted for language immersion programs.

4. Does My School Need to Find Its Own Candidate?

No, your school does not need to find its own candidate, though many choose to. If you’ve already identified an international teacher candidate, AIFS Professional Pathways will evaluate their eligibility and guide both parties through the sponsorship process. If you don’t have any candidates in mind, we can help identify qualified teachers from our international network who are certified in your desired subject area and grade level.

Either way, AIFS Professional Pathways will evaluate all candidates to ensure they meet U.S. Department of State eligibility requirements before sponsorship can be finalized.

5. How Are J-1 Teacher Candidates Screened and Vetted?

If you recruit your own candidates, your school should evaluate the teachers’ experience, credentials, and English proficiency to ensure they meet your local needs and requirements. Every J-1 Teacher candidate then goes through a thorough screening and vetting process before visa sponsorship is approved.

In cases where AIFS Professional Pathways identifies teachers for your school, they will undergo an evaluation and interview process which confirms they meet the base requirements for your position and are J-1 eligible. This thorough screening and vetting process ensures schools can be confident in the candidates they welcome into their classrooms.

As an official U.S. Department of State (DOS)-designated sponsor, AIFS Professional Pathways evaluates each candidate’s academic credentials, teaching certification, professional experience and references, motivation, and English language proficiency. Candidates must meet all U.S. DOS eligibility requirements, and AIFS Professional Pathways conducts its own review to confirm that each teacher is qualified, compliant, and prepared.

Moreover, the J-1 program itself provides an added layer of accountability and assurance. AIFS Professional Pathways monitors each teacher’s program throughout their stay, maintains open communication with the host school, and is available to both parties should any concerns arise. Schools are never left to manage a placement without support.

6. What Are My School’s Responsibilities During the Program?

Hosting a J-1 Teacher comes with a defined set of responsibilities that most schools are more than capable of meeting. Host schools are expected to:

  • Provide a full-time teaching position with qualified supervision
  • Offer a structured onboarding experience and ongoing professional development opportunities
  • Facilitate opportunities for cultural exchange
  • Provide compensation and working conditions that align with American teachers
  • Maintain open communication with AIFS Professional Pathways throughout the program
  • Promptly report any significant changes to the teacher’s role, compensation, or circumstances

If anything material changes during the program, such as a shift in duties, a change in supervisor, or an early departure—or if there is a teacher emergency—schools must notify their sponsor immediately. AIFS Professional Pathways is available throughout the program to help schools navigate any changes that arise.

7. What Is the J-1 Teacher Cultural Activity Component?

Every J-1 Teacher is required to develop and lead two cross-cultural activities annually as part of their program. For the first, the teacher leads an activity that introduces their home country’s culture to their classroom, school, or broader community. The second involves facilitating dialogue between U.S. students and peers from the teacher’s home country. The teacher will submit a report about these activities to their sponsor each year.

The cultural component ensures meaningful cultural exchange and structured international programming that enriches students’ understanding of the world beyond the classroom.

8. Who Handles the Visa and Compliance Requirements?

Having an experienced J-1 sponsor such as AIFS Professional Pathways makes visa processing and compliance much easier for schools. We manage everything in the visa sponsorship process, including DS-2019 issuance, federal database (SEVIS) registration and maintenance, compliance monitoring, and ongoing visa program administration—ensuring your school’s administrative team doesn’t have to.

Your role in the process is primarily to provide accurate information about the position and your school, complete a one-time host school onboarding, and stay in communication with your AIFS Professional Pathways team throughout the program.

9. How Much Does It Cost to Host an International Teacher?

The cost of hosting an international teacher depends primarily on their salary, which must follow the same standards as those for hiring a local teacher. In addition to salary, there are J-1 sponsorship fees, nominal federal fees, and health insurance costs. For some, there may also be fees associated with teacher licensure.

However, it’s important to note that how those fees are handled is flexible. Some schools choose to cover them as part of the compensation package, while others leave it to the teacher to pay directly. AIFS Professional Pathways’ year-one sponsorship fee is $1,700, which covers eligibility vetting, federal document issuance, pre-arrival preparation, program monitoring, 24/7 emergency support, and ongoing guidance for both the teacher and your school.

10. Can My School Host More Than One J-1 Teacher at a Time?

Yes. Schools can host multiple J-1 Teachers simultaneously, provided each placement is individually approved by the designated sponsor and your school has the capacity to appropriately supervise and support each teacher. There is no program-wide cap on the number of J-1 Teachers a school can host at one time; however, they cannot be used to replace local hires and should not outnumber their U.S. counterparts.
